Homeless people need a place to stay to get out of the elements. They need a shelter model that has been tested and proven to work in relieving suffering. A shelter that has all the necessary services for providing the opportunity for a better life all co-located on one site. A site in which those suffering from homelessness can sleep at night and work though programs during the day. A site that has a place for their animals and provides drug and alcohol counseling, credit counseling, job and skill training, veteran services, legal services, and many more opportunities that help those suffering from homelessness become housed.
Members of Hope for Sacramento have had the pleasure of touring what we believe is a new approach that will work. Haven for Hope, opened in San Antonio in 2010, is built around a revolutionary "one-stop shop" concept that brings multiple service providers to a single location. This increases the availability and efficiency of resources and has been taken up in other communities across the country.
Statistically, the Haven for Hope model works incredibly well by getting to root causes and solving issues, one individual victory at a time. A Haven for Hope model is not about spending more money, it is about spending existing funds more wisely so that we get a more effective outcome.
At Haven for Hope, more than 13,000 people have been helped into permanent or supportive housing, leading to an 81% reduction in San Antonio's downtown homeless count over the past 10 years.
A Haven for Hope-type facility in Sacramento could help us achieve similar results, changing countless lives for the better and saving many lives outright. Re-routing the existing budget dollars away from short-term low-barrier housing options that are destined to fail and into a full-service model helps clean up the community in immeasurable ways.
This proposed solution is the Cornerstone of Hope for Sacramento’ targeted efforts, along with our policy work and grassroots education.
